What are values

Before getting into the matter, the first thing we must be clear about is what values are.

The word "value" comes from the Latin “valor-valoris”. It is an ethical and moral scale that the individual possesses when acting. It is linked to the education received from childhood and helps us to discern good from evil.

So the values are rules of conduct and attitudes that dictate a certain way of acting, that are considered correct and that we repeat under any circumstance. Therefore, the values they let us live with other people fairly providing a benefit to society as a group.

Likewise, values can be incorporated through learning -as is the case at hand in this post- but they can also be discovered in more advanced phases of life.

Teaching children values is important simply because it will make them better people and more adapted to society.

Educating in values is educate morally because values teach the child to distinguish good from evil and to behave accordingly. Its objective is to ensure that the child acquires new ways of understanding life in a way that allows him to build his own personal and collective history.

Children when they are born are neither good nor bad. It is the education they will receive that will later determine their behavior. It must be remembered that children learn by example, hence the fundamental role that parents and caregivers play in their education.

What happens when we fail at this? among many other things, a highly topical problem that we mentioned at the beginning of this post: the bullying. And we go further still, the mobbing behavior. Between psychological and physical bullying at school and at work, the only line that separates them is the age group and, consequently, the environment (academic or work). Those kids who are disrespectful and bully in schools will likely do so in work settings in the future. So we strongly remind the importance of educating children in values.
