Types of pregnancy

Happy pregnant woman

¿How many types of pregnancy are there? When a woman becomes pregnant and is also a wanted baby, it will undoubtedly be one of the most exciting moments of her life ... she will have started a journey full of many emotions. When pregnancy occurs, it is because the uterus has been implanted in the zygote, which is why it is a biological process of the organism.

A pregnant woman will enjoy her pregnancy with more or less complications, since just as everyone is different, there will never be two equal pregnancies. Perceptions, the way of doing things and personal circumstances can make a pregnancy very different between two pregnant women.

But besides this, also It is necessary to emphasize that there are different types of pregnancies. Each type of pregnancy has its characteristics and it is important that you know them and take them into account because you never know which way life will take us. Without further ado, these are the types of pregnancy that exist.

Intrauterine pregnancy

An intrauterine pregnancy is a pregnancy that occurs inside the uterus, the fertilized egg implants itself in the inner wall of the uterus. This is the most common and frequent pregnancy in all pregnant women, is the pregnancy considered normal because the fetus is implanted inside the uterus developing without any alteration. The gestation of the fetus in an intrauterine pregnancy usually takes between 38 and 42 weeks, with an average of 40 weeks.

Although all pregnancies are different, you can have some common signs to detect a possible pregnancyThis includes: lack of menstruation, breast tenderness, nausea, vomiting, or fatigue. An ultrasound can confirm intrauterine pregnancy and determine where the woman is in the pregnancy.

Intrauterine pregnancy is divided into three trimesters:

  1. From conception to week 12.
  2. From week 13 to 20.
  3. The final stretch of week 29 until birth.

After the fertilized egg implants in the uterine wall, a placenta will develop from the endometrium (It is a mucous membrane that lines the uterus). It is a disgusting placenta that joins the embryo by the umbilical cord, carries nutrients from the mother and carries away waste products. When it reaches the second trimester it becomes a fetus, and from the third trimester many mothers address their fetuses as babies.

Throughout intrauterine pregnancy, a woman's body goes through many physical and hormonal changes. Every change in the mother and fetus combines to prepare them for the birthing process.

Eectopic pregnancy

El ectopic pregnancy is the pregnancy that occurs outside the womb. When ovulation occurs, the ovum travels to the uterus through the fallopian tubes and sperm enters the ovum, leading to fertilization. However, in this type of pregnancy the fetus cannot develop normally and does not survive.

But in an ectopic pregnancy the fertilized egg implants outside the uterus, there is no way to carry this pregnancy to term since the life of the pregnant woman can be in serious danger and it will be necessary to intervene as soon as possible.

Normally, ectopic pregnancy usually occurs in the first weeks of pregnancy, when it occurs many women do not even know that they are pregnant, so when they discover it it can be a quite large emotional impact. Doctors often find out what happens when a woman is in the eighth week of pregnancy.

Ectopic pregnancies are very scary and often have a great emotional impact because the baby cannot survive (although there has been some unusual case). So it is a loss that will cost a lot to overcome. Although having an ectopic pregnancy once does not mean it is always the case, you can have healthy pregnancies in the future.

Molar pregnancy

A molar pregnancy is a very dangerous pregnancy that develops because the egg was fertilized abnormally. This In this way, the placenta grows in an exorbitant way transforming into numerous cysts, the embryo does not form and if it begins to do so, it does not survive either.

A molar pregnancy is also known as a “hydatidiform mole” or a non-cancerous (benign) tumor that develops in the uterus. A molar pregnancy begins when the ovum is fertilized, but instead of continuing as a normal pregnancy, the placenta, as I have mentioned before, becomes an abnormal mass full of cysts.

In a complete molar pregnancy there is no embryo or normal placental tissue, When it comes to a partial molar pregnancy, there is an abnormal embryo and some normal placental tissue. In this case, the embryo begins to develop, but it is poorly formed and cannot survive.

A molar pregnancy can have very serious complications (it can even cause cancer) and therefore requires immediate and early treatment.

Other types of pregnancies

You can also get other types of pregnancies that must be known to understand:

  • Intra-abdominal pregnancy. Most of these pregnancies occur after a previous cesarean section. The cesarean scar can weaken and break, allowing the fetus to slide into the abdominal cavity. The viability of the pregnancy will depend on the gestational age of the fetus when the tear occurs.
  • Multiple pregnancy. This pregnancy can occur as a result of multiple eggs being fertilized at the same time. It is when twins, twins, triplets, quadruplets develop ...
  • High risk pregnancies. A high-risk pregnancy is when a woman becomes pregnant and is over the age of 35, or has diabetes or other health conditions that can affect the pregnancy. A high-risk pregnancy is a pregnancy at risk of complications during the gestation months. In some cases, pregnancy can be classified as high risk by taking medications that are needed to control certain medical conditions that could affect the fetus. If the mother has a history of other complications in previous pregnancies it could also cause high-risk pregnancies.
