How to work geometric shapes in children

children's geometric shapes

In childhood it is when children begin to know the basic geometric shapes (square, triangle, circle and rectangle). There are specific educational activities where we can help you learn these geometric concepts better and in a fun way. Let's see how to work geometric shapes in children.

Learning from the game

As we have seen many times, the best way to learn from children is through play. In a playful way and almost without realizing it, learn basic concepts for its development. Through cards, songs, sensory activities, drawings and games we can help you understand and become familiar with your first figures, with its size, its angles, its sides and shape. This way they will be able to classify and recognize them.

Next we will tell you some activities and games to work geometric shapes in children, where they will have their first contact with squares, circles, rectangles and triangles. They are repetition activities to stimulate their learning.

Activities to work geometric shapes in children

  • Puppets in the form of geometric figures. Children love puppets, and we can take advantage of it to make them with them manually and give them geometric shapes. You can use cardboard of different colors and cut them out with the different geometric figures. Then play with your child to decorate them to your liking and thus customize them. Then have him interact with them, and give him the name of the figure (Don triangle, doña circle ...) and explain the difference in shape between them.

geometric shapes activities

  • Geometric figures puzzle. There are different puzzles on the market to start working with the little ones their first contact with the figures. If not, you can also create them yourself, cutting a cardboard in the different shapes that there are, and then cutting it into smaller pieces (not too much) for your child to play to put them together.
  • Songs with the shapes. On YouTube you will find specific songs where they talk about the different ways of things. It is a fun way to learn while having fun.
  • Figures with eva rubber. With different colors of eva rubber, give them different geometric shapes. Then encourage him to put them together to form different things, the limit is his imagination. Explain what each shape is called. You can do the same with other materials like felt or cardboard.
  • Murals of figures. Take a large card for each basic geometric figure. Write big on name of each and ask him to put things on top that have that shape. You can give an example of each figure. This way you will become familiar with the different figures.
  • Twister of figures. A fun game that can be created at home and played by the whole family. It works the same as the twister, but instead of being just different colored circles, we will create a carpet with the different geometric figures and we will ask the child to step on one in particular. You can use a large card or several sheets of paper for this.
  • Clay. We can also work the geometric shapes with plasticine. To do this, we take a sheet of paper and draw the geometric figure that we want to work on. The child must create that shape with the plasticine and put it on top, to see if it agrees or not.
  • Geometric shapes sewing. An activity to also work with fine motor skills. We will draw a certain shape on a cardboard and we will make some holes in its outline so that they can pass a cord.
  • Salt box. The salt box is ideal to stimulate their learning and could not be missing for this activity. For this you can put some cards or cards nearby, so that he has them in view, with each figure and that he creates them in the sand.
  • Creating contours. With this simple game they will have fun. Draw a geometric shape on cardboard and ask him to follow the outline with masking tape or washi tape.

Because remember ... stimulating your child to learn will help him in his development. Don't put pressure on him to learn faster, each child has their own pace.
