2LSEMR method to study, what does it consist of?

teenagers studying

When it comes to study skills, not all parents know what to do or how to approach their children's studies. In educational centers, they do not usually teach the study techniques necessary for students to develop good learning, they simply tell them what to know for the test period. Then save who can.

There will be students with greater retentive capacity who will be able to know the contents (although the study techniques they use are not correct), others, on the other hand, may have more difficulties and that this causes frustration or emotional discomfort. They think they are not capable of studying or learning ... They create a wrong label and academic, school and even family problems can appear because of this.

But the reality is that all students who have a normal capacity for intelligence can learn and develop good study techniques. Even if each student profile may be different and have different ways of learning (some more visual, others more auditory or even kinesthetic), what matters is that good study techniques are known to combine the personalized study forms of each one.

The 2LSEMR method is the most widely used study technique and also works best for students of any age and educational grade. It can be applied from elementary school to any age, adapting the method to the level of study that the student must apply.

What is the 2LSEMR study method?

For this method to be effective, what matters above all is that it is followed in order and that no steps are skipped. If you jump from one step to another to go faster, then the method will not be effective and the study, in addition to being heavier, will be incomplete and the results may not be as expected. The complete method must be used so that in this way, the maximum potential of the student can be obtained.

2: 2 quick reads

The first two readings (pre-readings) should be quick and should follow this order:

  • The first reading It will only be to read the titles, subtitles and bold and get an idea of what the study is about. It is simply to be located in the theme and should not exceed 5 or 10 minutes.
  • A second quick read, This should be done at a specific point in the reading, paragraph by paragraph and underlining those terms that are not understood. Before continuing on to the next point, it is important to discover what those words that are not understood mean and to be able to give them a meaning taking into account the context of the study topic.

L: Comprehensive reading

In this section, a paragraph by paragraph reading should be carried out, in a comprehensive way and with a good understanding of everything that is being read. It will be the 3 reading in total since the study method has been started. In no case should you go to the next paragraph without understanding the previous one. At this point it consists of carrying out a comprehensive reading and reading the text carefully. In this way, it will be possible to delve into the content of what is being studied.

It is necessary to pay attention to the text, to each of the words and reflecting on what is being read, on the ideas, on the meaning and the main ideas. In this part you must understand what the text is telling you in order to move on to the next point.

S: underlined

Underlining is also an important part of the study method that must not be skipped and must be done correctly. Each paragraph of the reading will have one or more main ideas that should be found to highlight with the underline and other secondary ones that should not be forgotten even if they are not given too much importance. It is important that the main ideas you underline answer some questions such as: What? How? When? Why? Who or who? Etc.

That is to say, underlining is underlining to highlight the most important ideas to highlight. You can highlight the main and secondary ideas, as well as the most important keywords or details, by means of lines below the text. The underline will allow you to save study time to focus your attention only on what interests you and also, it will facilitate the completion of the next step: the diagrams.

E: Schematics

The scheme is a structure or skeleton where you will put all the information and then do the next step: Memorization. Well organized and structured main ideas will appear in the outline. So you can study everything at a glance and remember the main ideas successfully. It is necessary that the scheme has a good coherence in its structure and above all, that it is not chaotic. If you have a chaotic scheme, your brain will not want to study it and it will cost you much more to learn what it puts in it.

The objective of the outline is to graphically organize a text summary and see at a glance all the content (point by point) of the content. There are different types of schemes, you must choose the one that best suits the way of studying each one. The student should choose the one with which he feels most comfortable to be able to put his ideas in texts. There are for example the schemes of arrows, of numbers, the key schemes, the mixed ones, etc.

M: Memorization

Memorization is a very important part of maintaining and retaining information in memory. Thus, the most important contents can be remembered to be able to successfully develop an oral or written test. It's a way of retaining information, storing it in long-term memory, and then seamlessly retrieving that information whenever necessary.

There are different techniques to be able to memorize different content. The memorization techniques will have different degrees of difficulty. These techniques are called mnemonic rules. Some of the best known are:

  • The repetition
  • The cartoon technique
  • Acrostic
  • The chain technique
  • Etc

A: Summary and Review

When the last point is reached, the student should be able to make a summary in their own words of each point worked, without having to look at the outline or the underlined text. Only in this way will you know if the content is known and if there are parts that you must study again to consolidate your knowledge. With the summary you should write briefly and precisely the most important of the topic you want to learn.

After the summary, the review should be done. In the review, what has been learned must be repeated mentally or aloud and another person will ask the student questions to find out if the syllabus is really known. This way you will be able to know what is best known and what should be reviewed.
