Amenorrhea can occur for many reasons, some are normal throughout a woman's life and other times they can be the side effect of some medication or even the sign of a medical problem to be treated.
In the case of natural amenorrhea, it usually occurs due to pregnancy, breastfeeding or menopause. But it can also happen for other reasons that we will see below.
Reasons that can cause amenorrhea in a woman:
- The use of contraceptives or IUDs can make some periods go away.
- Taking some medications such as: antipsychotics, antidepressants, chemotherapy, blood pressure medications, allergy medications ...
- Low body weight It disrupts many hormonal functions in the body, potentially stopping ovulation. Women who have an eating disorder, such as anorexia or bulimia, often stop having periods due to these abnormal hormonal changes.
- Doing excessive exercise. Several factors combine to contribute to missed periods in athletes, including low body fat, stress, and high energy expenditure.
- Mental stress It can temporarily alter the functioning of the hypothalamus, an area of the brain that controls the hormones that regulate your menstrual cycle.
- Hormonal imbalance (Polycystic ovary syndrome or PCOS, thyroid malfunction, a pituitary tumor, premature menopause, etc).
- Problems with your own sexual organs (uterine scars, lack of reproductive organs, structural abnormality in the vagina).
