How to teach children to be efficient in saving energy

El March 5 is declared World Energy Efficiency Day, and as adults and responsible we must instill and educate our children to be more efficient in saving energy. This will help them become aware of preserving and take care of the environment, enhancing their autonomy and responsibilities.

We tell you how you can save energy and be more efficient at home. And remember that children learn, above all, by example, so adopt these behaviors every day. Today is as good a day as any other, but not the only one to reflect on the rational use that we give to energy and act accordingly.

Some facts about energy efficiency

Today, World Energy Efficiency Day, the data is alarming. According to the Global Footprint Network (GFN) we would need 1,6 planets to reach the resources we use each year.

Luckily, the Aquae Foundation gives a ray of hope and tells us that we can meet all energy needs if we increase the energy efficiency of buildings, electrical appliances, vehicles and factories.

So let's get down to business and show them basic questions such as turning off the lights that are not used, putting LED bulbs that reduce consumption by up to 80%, using smart plugs, turning off the tap while brushing teeth or lathering in the shower and other ideas that we will tell you below. By the way, a curious thing is that LED bulbs have been invented since 1927, but it is not until now that their use has become widespread.

Tricks to be efficient in saving light

As we said at the beginning, teach your children to turn off the lights when they leave a room or do not use them, but not only for an economic question of the price of the light, but for a commitment not to waste energy. Natural light is the healthiest, use artificial light only when necessary.

Encourage them to choose small appliances, toys, or electrical devices such as calculators, clocks, night lights that work with alternative and renewable energies.

Once you have finished using the electrical appliances, for example, when you finish playing with the game console or watching television, disconnect it. Not just put it on pause. Explain what the phantom consumption which can be up to 10% of the total electricity bill.

Make one cleaning session of crystals, lamps, bulbs, this will increase the luminosity without increasing consumption.

Warm room with flower pots and candles

As an experiment and also to show your children what energy efficiency is, you can make a heating with four candles, the typical low decoration works, and two clay pots of different sizes. This heater heats a space of about 10 square meters for 4 hours. It does not remove the cold, below zero, but it does generate a warm environment.

The idea is that the four candles are lit under the small pot, and then the large one. A stream of hot air is mounted through the holes in the pots to keep the environment warm. There's a lot doubts about whether it is an economical method, because it is not a good alternative if you use it daily, because of the candles and their caloric power compared to other alternative heating systems. But it is very fun to explain to your children how it works, of course not leave them alone and that with your supervision they learn less conventional methods of warming up.

So that the heat of the room does not escape, you can put together weatherstrippingYou will have a good time doing DIY. You will be being more efficient and helping to protect the environment. With these ideas we hope we have helped you to be more efficient at home, but you already know that there are other things you can do, such as instilling in them the use of both sides of the paper, moving by bicycle, climbing stairs instead of using an elevator, or using the community transportation.
