Having courage or bravery is important for the development of any person and therefore, children must learn this personality trait to make it their own in life. Among good character traits, courage is important, especially in those who must overcome internal conflicts.
Courage is: 'The ability to do something that scares; courage; strength in the face of pain or grief ”. That last part of the definition of courage is why courage tends to go hand in hand with other positive traits like kindness. It's easy to be nice at our best but much more difficult to be brave when pain or pain fuels anger or fear.
Why is courage a good character trait?
The ability to do things that scare you means you won't be easily intimidated by fears like:
- Physical danger: e.g. fatal injuries, dangerous terrain, vicious or ruthless opponents
- Rejection: be it romantic, professional or social.
- Humiliation: such as that experienced after rejection or being rejected for mistakes.
Courage is therefore important to people of any age and in any context. Courage strengthens anyone in pursuit of their goals. It helps them to continue even going through the pain.
How could courage help?
Courage could lend you a commitment to persevere. A brave person can persevere despite discomfort. This is the character who sticks his neck out when a group decision is wrong or unethical and says so. Courage is key to good leadership as it enables people to say or doing what is true, honest, or courageous, even if doing so makes them unpopular.
Courage is a trait that children will learn if they see it modeled on the adults around them. Have courage before life and your children will also have courage in the face of any adversity that comes their way.
