Effects of drug abuse on unborn babies

Amniotic fluid

Unfortunately, many babies are born with the risk of abstinence because their mothers have consumed drugs or medications that are not suitable for pregnancy, perhaps knowing that it is dangerous or under the threshold of ignorance. What's more, drug use and abuse has very negative effects on the development of unborn babies.

The use of illicit drugs represents a risk for pregnant women and their babies. Drugs can contain impurities that can be harmful to an unborn baby. Pregnant women who use drugs may be more likely to harm the fetus with risky behaviors and poor nutrition.

Drug use can lead to premature birth or low birth weight. It can also cause the baby to have withdrawal symptoms (sometimes in the form of neonatal withdrawal syndrome), birth defects, or learning and behavior problems later in life.

An estimated 14% of adults with a substance use disorder reported having received treatment in the past year. It is necessary that anyone and especially pregnant women receive immediate help to stop drugs and that their babies are not at risk of suffering the side effects of the consumption of these substances.

It is necessary that there is full social awareness so that drug use is not seen as something unproblematic and begins to be seen in the dangerous way it is and how bad the use of illicit substances can cause. Although at first the person may think that they have control over drug use, with little time of use, brain chemistry changes and they are drugs that take control of the body of the person who begins to be addicted to those substances in particular.
