Motor stimulation: material and exercises for the baby (12-18 months)

motor-stimulation-12-to-18-months

During this week we have been talking about the motor stimulation of babies, focusing on activities and exercises between the ages of 0-12 months. That is why today we will focus on the stage of 12 to 18 months, since each age has its learning.

El learning pace of each child is particular, that is, each child has a rhythm, slower or faster. That is why the child should never be pressured to learn. Everything will depend on the stimulation that is given from the beginning. It is for all this that early stimulation it is so important and necessary from a very young age.

La motor stimulationAs we have said in previous articles, it aims to maximize the child's motor capacities and possibilities, through deliberate and programmed stimulation.

The motor stimulation exercises that I present below are associated with the 12 to 18 month stage. In them it shows the materials that you need to make them and, they are divided into the two types of stimulation: the coarse (static positions, movement and coarse manipulation of objects) and the fine (more precise movements, with greater control of muscle tone, generally referring to the hand, fingers and hand-eye coordination).

Material for stimulation

  • Toys of all kinds.
  • Cart or stroller.
  • Balls.
  • Carpet or blanket.
  • Cushions.
  • Foams of different shapes.
  • Boxes of different sizes.
  • Jars of different sizes.
  • Soft plastic objects.
  • Pieces of cork.
  • Sponges
  • Rings.
  • Lace games.
  • Rope.
  • Striking stickers.

Exercises for gross motor stimulation

  • Place the child standing up, leaning on a table. The mother or father will be separated from him, at least 1 m, and by means of the gesture and the word will encourage him to go walking to him.
  • The mom or dad will induce the baby to push a cart or doll car to collect all the toys that are on the floor. First they will do it together, and then the child will do it alone.
  • Place the child standing on the floor on a rug. The mother will stand behind him, and she will pick up a ball and throw it in front of him, so that he will walk behind her. At first it will grab you, but as it goes moving it will be released without realizing it.
  • A structure will be made with cushions or foams of different shapes, which the mother will encourage the child to climb. A good idea for him to do this exercise is to place his favorite toy on top of the structure to make it more attractive to do the activity.
  • The mother will place two identical containers in front of the baby, in which there will be boxes of different sizes. You will be taught to pick up and pass the boxes from one site to another.

Exercises for fine motor stimulation

  • The father will have in front of the baby, a series of open jars, and will place the lids next to them. Then the father will prompt the child to place above each container its corresponding lid.
  • The child will be seated in front of a table and a container of water will be placed in front of him. In it, we will have a series of plastic objects, pieces of cork, sponges so that they handles.
  • A container full of rings will be placed in front of him (be careful that they are not too small, it may be that he can swallow them) and, he will be told by gestures and words that string you each ring on a piece of string.
  • The child will be given a set of pieces in which he will have to to fit in the different shapes in their corresponding places.
  • Sitting on the floor on a blanket, Mom or Dad will put out many magazines. These will go passing the leaves from magazines or books, one by one. The child will then have to imitate them.
