How to make a homemade abacus

The abacus has been used for centuries to learn to perform simple mathematical operations. Today it is still used, and it is a very useful tool for children to start in arithmetic operations. It is easy to buy an abacus in any store, but if you make it yourself with the help of your children, it will be much more valued.

Abacus made with cardboard

This simple abacus can be made in a while, in addition it will be a perfect occasion to teach children to recycle. You only need cardboard with enough thickness to be resistant, some colored beads, paint in the child's favorite color and an elastic.

The first step will be to paint the cardboard, with a brush and acrylic paint it will be perfect. Then, with the help of a ruler, measure the cardboard and make 10 marks. When the paint is dry, make small cuts on the two sides of the cardboard, right where you left the marks. Cut 10 pieces of elastic to the same size, insert the necessary accounts in each one, starting with one and ending with 10.

Carefully insert the rows of beads into the slots that you previously made, knot behind the cardboard so that no beads escape. With the help of a non-erasable marker, mark the number of beads in each row, this will serve as a reminder.

This puzzle-shaped game can be a great alternative to spend a fun time with children, while learning to count. You can do it with fruits like the one you see in the image, or you can choose children's favorite motifs, geometric shapes, animal silhouettes or any shape they want.

Use cardboard that is sturdy but not excessively thick. Glue a white card on the cardboard to be able to draw the chosen motifs. Draw several rectangles with the same measure, divide into three sections, the central one larger than the outer two. Draw the puzzle shape to be able to join them later. Cut carefully with the help of scissors or a cutter.
