Why do you have to blackout with your children on Earth Hour

Earth Hour

The Earth inside a light bulb

Children are small sponges that absorb everything that happens around them. If you dance in front of a mirror, a child will dance next to you. And you will learn not to be ashamed and express yourself freely. Children are a copy of what they see in their relatives. Hence the importance of being great examples for them.

We have to teach our children to take care of their planet. And we must do it from the example. It is just as important that we teach a child to recycle, as it is important that their own parents do it. If the right importance is not given to it at home, the child will not understand it as such.

If we create habits in our children, if we teach them responsibility, from the game, they will not understand it as a punishment and they will end up doing it out of habit. We just have to find our creativity so that children have fun while they are learning.

What is Earth Hour?

This initiative was born in Australia in 2008, with the intention of raise awareness in society in the fight against climate change. This movement was promoted by the WWF (In English, world wide fund for nature) together with the advertising agency Leo Burnett. The message you want to convey is in the form of electrical blackout and it takes place for an hour on the last Saturday in March.

More and more households and large companies are joining this initiative, even in recent years, the most important cities on the planet have joined the fight by obscuring the most iconic monuments, such as the Alhambra in Granada, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Puerta de Alcalá in Madrid or the Empire State Building in New York.

In 2017, almost 7.000 cities from more than 150 countries joined this initiative.

Why should you join Earth Hour?

First of all, you must transmit this message to your children, explain to them the reason for this claim. For children to be involved in conserving the environment, they must be aware of its importance for the life of all living beings.

It is a perfect occasion to teach your children images of the planet. On the web you will find thousands of real photographs. Show them what the Amazon is like now and explain what it might be like in a few years. Look for images of the seabed, so that the children can see the wonderful life of the seabed. Species that you may never know because they are in danger of extinction.

Children have an innate sensitivity, you will be surprised how they are able to get involved. They can understand that if we do not take action together, when they are older the planet will not be as they know it now.

Engage your children in the fight against climate change

Taking advantage of the fact that the blackout time is celebrated on Saturday, you can organize a family outing, it will be a perfect opportunity to spend an afternoon away from home where you will have contributed to the cause by turning off all the lights and the less important appliances.

Investigate if your city participates in any way in the act. Last year, 250 Spanish cities joined the blackout. Perhaps you can enjoy with your family a wonderful show that is not seen on any other day. It would even be nice to create a family tradition to repeat every year.

Encourage your children to share this initiative with their friends, they will love to tell them what they have learned and convince them to join as well. Create a special photo album of that event. Share those photos of your cities collaborating with the cause. Social networks are an open door to the world. The whole planet will see that you live in a compromised city.
